I just couldn't put myself through the headache again dealing with a game engine that won't work correctly.īut it appears M&B (Warband) made that kind of game, only it works.įolks should count their lucky stars. For years, I skipped playing M&B because I kept getting these flashbacks of dealing with these Akella games. These games are so similar to M&B, even down to how the conversations work and how things work when you're inside towns, I would not be surprised if Taleworlds devs used these Akella games for inspiration. They were trying to make M&B-before there ever was a M&B-only with Pirates. These games were a nightmare to try and play, because you could SEE what the devs were trying to do. Because they all ran on the same engine-it was called Storm I think. They were PLAGUED with bugs, and every one of these games had the same bugs. None of these games (save Sea Dogs) ran correctly. You could also visit towns and stuff and run around in them much like you do M&B. Eventually, you could find yourself boarding enemy ships and do some really crappy 3rd Person fencing. But then in M&B, you have these 3rd Person Skirmishes, yeah? Well in these Akella games, you had that too, except you managed your ship in some pretty intense naval battles.
Now, replace the overworld map with the Carribean isles, routhern coast of Florida, eastern cost of Mexico, northern coast of South America, set during the Age of Piracy where England, France, Spain, and the Dutch all battled against one another and Pirates, and instead of riding around on the overworld on horseback with a large crew, you have a ship that sails the seas. What I mean is, take M&B, right? Just imagine it in your mind for a moment. It basically tells you about a studio called Akella that most notably made these Pirate Themed games that for all intents and purposes presented the player with a game loop that was basically identical to M&B. Look over that wiki and follow it through-focusing mostly on the pirate-themed games. I would say its road to success was a slow burn. And besides that, M&B (even Warband) wasn't a Mega-Blockbuster hit at first. I would argue it is largely due to the fact that no game prior to M&B actually did it very well. M&B features gameplay that for whatever reasons isn't often copied. I wanted to share something with some folks who may be too young to remember or know about this:Īs many have said already, there aren't many games like M&B. I have been on this search for well over a decade. Somewhat of a necro post, but I too have been looking for similar games. If you're brazillian and you know my channel you'll probably know why I'm interested, anyway, do you guys know any other games with this kind of mechanic? This one may surprise some people, but yeah, you can start in ancient China without any contacts, get to know the right people, join someone else's faction as an officer, rise through the ranks and become a vassal with lands for yourself, plot a rebellion and take the throne, or just raid a town and make it yours Game similar to M&B's early game, but you're stuck as a mercenary, meet towns, run away from stronger enemies, kill the weaker ones, profit and equip your brothers with the best you can get, though the lack of an actual rise to power make it quite a stretch
#MOUNT BLADE 2 WARBAND AGE OF WONDERS UPGRADE#
Space game but still counts, in this game you start at the corner of the galaxy with few territories, deal with other nations, lead your fleet, command other NPC fleets and try to expand your territory, upgrade your ship and make it bigger
Start as a nobody or a group of nobodies, get beaten and abused, maybe even enslaved, eventually you'll get to build your own town, recruit some buddies and kill everyone.
By similar to mount and Blade what I mean is the rise to power, starting as a nobody, getting more famous, more powerful, better equiped and eventually conquering new lands as a king or emperor, I know a few games that fit this criteria:
